Ground Marking Stencils – Materials, Application, Advantages and Uses

Laser Cutting Services specialises in creating high-quality custom road & ground marking stencils. These stencils are essential for clear, professional signage in car parks, charging stations, playgrounds and at events.

Materials used

We use durable materials that withstand outdoor conditions, ensuring longevity and reusability.

Common materials include:

  • Polyester film (brand name Mylar) – A rollable yet strong material that resists tearing and can be reused multiple times. Often used for giant stencils or for lower use.
  • Polypropylene – A rigid plastic that offers excellent durability and ease of handling.

Application

Our stencils are designed for use with various marking paints and sprays, allowing for quick and accurate application. Some paints they are compatible with include;

  • MMA (Methyl Methacrylate) cold plastic line marking paint such as Lineway UK MMA  – extremely durable and resistant to wear with a fast cure time
  • Acrylic based surface paint such as Lineway Acrylic claims to be the closest alternative to preformed thermoplastic
  • Chlorinated Rubber line paint such as Jawel Paint is recommended on surfaces which are susceptible to chemical damage.
  • Water-Based Acrylic Line Paints such as Coo-Var are ideal for enclosed spaces where the release of oil-based solvents is restricted or unwanted.
  • Epoxy-based Paints such as Resincoat HB Epoxy recommended as another highly durable paint
  • Aerosol Spray Paints such as Prosolve Temporary Spray Paint – Ideal for quick and temporary markings.

Stencils offer Several Advantages:

  • Cost-Effective and Easy Application – No need for specialist installation; stencils can be applied with standard road paints as above.
  • Check out this video which demonstrates how the experts Top Mark Solutions use 2mm polypropylene road marking stencils and white acrylic line marking paint to mark EV parking bays.
  • Customisable – Unlimited design options, including branding, logos, and tailored layouts.
  • Versatile – Suitable for a wide range of surfaces, including tarmac, concrete, and brick.
  • Eco-Friendly – Stencils produce less waste compared to single-use thermoplastic solutions.
  • Flexibility – Stencils allow for easy modifications and updates, whereas thermoplastic markings are permanent and more difficult to alter.
  • Lower Setup Costs – No need for specialised heat application equipment, making stencils a accessible option.
  • Better for Temporary Markings – Ideal for events or short-term custom projects, as stencils can be reused multiple times and can be removed easily (if you use temporary paints!)
  • Check out this video below which demonstrates how Media Gang use 350 polyester film stencils and temporary line marking paint to brand the London Marathon!

Uses

Our stencils are widely used for:

  • Ground and Road Markings – Car parks & parking reservation, cycle lanes, directional signs, safety, helipads
  • EV Charging Stations – Custom designs for clear and branded electric vehicle bays.
  • Playgrounds – Educational and interactive ground markings.
